SECURITY ALERT – EMAIL SCAM
Media Release: 04 August 2010
An email is going around seemingly from the Irish League of Credit Unions. The address used is Billing@creditunion.ie.
This email is NOT from the Irish League of Credit Unions.
We would ask you to DELETE THE EMAIL and NOT TO RESPOND TO THE EMAIL in any way.
The email has a link Confirm my Billing Records which points to a link to a webpage similar in looks to a www.creditunion.ie page. This page asks for your passport number and expiry date.
This is a Phishing Email whereby fraudsters will “fish” private information from a person through the email. They’ll usually request an “update” or “verification” of personal details and sometimes passwords. Then they’ll typically use it to access a person’s financial accounts or for identity theft.
Credit Union members should note that the Irish League of Credit Unions and Credit Unions would never ask you for this information either by e-mail or telephone and you should never disclose this information to anyone.
More information and advice on online security, protecting your identity and your personal information can be found at www.makeitsecure.org.
