Good Health and Well-Being is a key tenet of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. The aim is to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
In Naomh Breandan Credit Union (NBCU) in Loughrea, Galway wellness is an essential part of their daily routine.
NBCU implemented a 4-day working week trial a year ago, with an aim to enhance employee wellbeing, improve work life balance, increase productivity, and improve overall job satisfaction. In doing so, the work was redistributed across four days, while also upskilling the staff in key areas, maintaining the same pay, and managing the workload effectively.
To further support this measure, the credit union also introduced a well-being app provided by Welliba, allowing staff to log into the app each morning updating their physical and mental health wellbeing. This app supports and encourages staff to take accountability for their own wellbeing in a subtle and non-intrusive way.
Staff Feedback
The feedback from the credit union's staff members has been extremly positive.
“The 4 day week has been given me time back for myself, for my children and to allow me more time to pursue interests and hobbies I otherwise might not. I am spending more time with my family as result of the 4-day week, which has allowed for a much more positive work/life balance.
“The Welliba app has empowered me to take control of my health and wellbeing and has become an essential part of my daily routine.”
Here’s what Welliba had to say ….
“Welliba are delighted to work with NBCU to support their colleagues on their journey of personal growth, wellbeing, and employee experience, by providing actionable insights into what drives, boosts and blocks their experience at work, along with providing access to personalised learning to support them on their journey”

Walking Bus
Promoting wellness and well being amongst credit union personnel is just one element of NBCU's work in this area. The credit union has recently collaborated with a number of stakeholders in the community to establish a Walking School Bus in Loughrea town. The walking bus is a safe way for children to walk to school. It promotes regular daily exercise and it reinforces the habit of walking for shorter journeys. It also good for the environment, resulting in less congestion and traffic, which ultimately means less pollution within the community.
Healthy people are the foundation for healthy communities and everyone has a role to play in promoting good health and well being at local level. Whether it is raising awareness about the importance of good health, or living or promoting healthy lifestyles, the sum or a large number of small actions can lead to powerful and impactful results.
