Youth at the heart of the Community with Cara Credit Union

Cara Credit Union deliver a wide range of impactful youth initiatives annually to give students the tools they need for everyday life and a better tomorrow. Here is a snapshot of 4 major initiatives below. 
 

Biodiversity Initiative 

This is a partnership between Cara Credit Union and Tralee Bay Wetlands, involving local primary schools. Schools receive and plant trees, fruit bushes, and expert guidance from ecologists. Children learn soil care, tree planting, and sustainable living practices through hands-on activities.  

Benefits for the Community 

• Environmental Education: Instils ecological awareness and climate responsibility in young students. 

• Practical Skills: Pupils gain life-enhancing skills like planting and caring for trees. 

• Community Engagement: Strengthens ties between schools, families, and local organisations. 

• Long-Term Impact: Creates greener school environments and contributes to biodiversity, improving local ecosystems.   
   

Money Mule Awareness Programme 

This is an educational campaign called “Don’t Be a Money Mule”, delivered in post-primary schools and third-level institutions. Includes presentations, webinars for parents, social media campaigns, and real-life case studies including a video by two students convicted of Money Muling. Developed in partnership with An Garda Síochána and other Kerry credit unions.  

Benefits for the Community 

• Crime Prevention: Reduces the risk of young people being exploited by criminal gangs. 

• Legal Awareness: Educates students and parents about the severe consequences of money muling (criminal records, career impact). 

• Safety & Support: Provides resources for those who suspect they are victims, fostering a safer community. 

• Reach: Covers all schools in Kerry, ensuring widespread awareness.   
   

CU Through Your Interview  

This initiative prepares Transition Year (TY) students for real-world interviews and financial independence. Now in its second year, 900 students participated in year one, growing to over 1,000 students in year 2 across 14 secondary schools in Cara CU’s common bond area.  

Programme Structure 

Career Skills Workshops 

• Delivered in partnership with Mary Lucey (Career Ahead). 

• Covers CV preparation, interview techniques, and confidence-building. 

Mock Interviews 

• Each student completes a 15-minute professional interview. 

• Panels include Cara CU senior management and staff, plus Mary Lucey. 

• Students receive personalized feedback on CV and performance.  

Financial Literacy 

• Budgeting workshops teach students how to manage income from part-time jobs. 

• Promotes Cara CU’s free student current account with a globally accepted debit card.  

Rock Your College Experience  

This initiative helps Leaving Certificate students transition smoothly into college, apprenticeships, or further education. In-person sessions are delivered in schools for 6th-year students in Cara CU’s common bond areas (Tralee, Castleisland, Killorglin, Ballyduff, Causeway, Corca Dhuibhne). 

Topics Covered:  

• Moving away from home and adjusting to new environments. 

• Cooking on a budget and managing finances. 

• Healthy relationships and personal safety. 

• What to do if you picked the wrong course. 

• Money matters and budgeting tips.  

Programme Goals 

• Address the high dropout rate among first-year students (1 in 6 leave their course).  

• Provide practical advice to reduce emotional and financial stress for students and families.
