CEO (Chief Executive Officer) - The Lough Credit Union

The Lough Credit Union is a member-owned financial services provider on the southside of Cork City that has operated at the heart of its community for over half a century.

With over 13,000 members, assets in excess of €102million and with offices in Bandon Road and Togher, the credit union’s mission is to provide financial services for all its members in a professional manner; “not for profit, not for charity, but for service”.
The credit union is focused on providing those residing, working and studying in its community with a genuine co-operative banking solution, by offering products and services driven by the needs of the membership rather than by profit or corporate interest. At the core of the credit union’s mission is the philosophy and operating principles of the Irish Credit Union Movement.

The Role:

The credit union is seeking to appoint a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO will be responsible for all day-to-day and operational activities of the credit union. The CEO will provide strategic leadership to develop and drive the business forward to achieve the growth potential of the credit union. The CEO will also be responsible for the implementation of policies and compliance requirements governing all credit union operations, and will represent the credit union in the public domain.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and propose to the board of directors for debate, scrutiny and approval, strategies for the strategic plan

  • Develop and implement the strategic and business objectives as articulated in the strategic plan

  • Effective development and motivation of staff who continue to contribute to the growth and performance of The Lough Credit Union

  • Full compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements including the areas of risk, data protection, money laundering, employment law and health and safety

  • Ensure high quality internal controls to safeguard the assets of the members of The Lough Credit Union

  • Oversee the performance of The Lough Credit Union to maximise financial return and service to members

  • Accurate presentation & reporting of financial accounts to the Board

  • Assist the Board in formulating and reviewing policies for all aspects of the business

  • Lead the planning, implementation and creative development of all marketing and growth strategies

  • Devise and manage targets and performance standards for all employees and key areas of the business plan. 


The Person:

The successful candidate will have the following:

  • The vision, drive and ambition needed to develop the business. 

  • A strong capability to drive strategic goals and implement continuous improvement.

  • Be a confident, committed and ethical individual with the ability to operate with the utmost integrity. 

  • Sound leadership and communication skills, with the ability to manage stakeholder, member (customer) and third-party relationships.

  • Experience in managing a diverse workforce with excellent people management and motivational skills

  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills

  • A strong Financial Services background, ideally with experience at senior management level, with a forward-looking and growth mindset

  • The required minimum qualifications for the role (e.g.  QFA and/or CUA, or equivalent).

  • A clear understanding of applicable legislation (e.g. the Credit Union Act, Consumer Protection Code, Data Protection, and Criminal Justice Act – MLR & CTF etc.) is essential.

  • Knowledge of and experience in technology development

This is a pre-approved control function under the Central Bank fitness and probity regime.
The remuneration package offered will be commensurate with the seniority of this position.
