Credit Control Officer 

 

Job Title: Credit Control Officer
Reporting to: Manager
Hours of Work: 34.5hrs per week ( Alternative Friday Evenings)
Salary: To be discussed at interview

General Scope of the Role
The Credit Control Officer of the credit union will be responsible for the implementation of the credit union policies and procedures. You will be working in conjunction with the Credit Control Committee to minimising the number of member accounts in arrears. You will regularly work with our members through face-to-face meetings, telephone and online communications to provide the highest quality service and advice. You will also be required to liaise with external organisations, as well as providing monthly management information to the Board of Directors on all aspects of collections and bad debt control.
 
Main Purpose of the Job
Responsible for managing all aspects of bad debt recovery and supporting other operational processes, diligently, in a timely and accurate manner, and in line with WBR Credit Union policy, procedure and regulatory requirements.
 
Main Duties

  • Monitoring, pursuing and taking late payments by all agreed methods, following Credit Union Policy & Procedure

  • Communicating with members by telephone, email, text, face to face and by written correspondence

  • Working with members who wish to reduce their loan repayments and develop affordable repayment structures

  • Timely and effective collection of all debts and member payments

  • Conduct Credit Reference Agency checks as appropriate/ Monthly Experian Returns

  • Responsible for recording clear and accurate notes and diary events for all members

  • Attending regular credit control meetings

  • Responsible for accurate entry of data in the customer database and maintaining records of non-payment/agreed payment plans accurately in the Credit Union software and ensuring all documentation/correspondence are filed appropriately and readily retrievable by colleagues

  • Furnish regular reports to the manager, reflecting the current status, follow-up and legal process, where applicable, on all bad debtor accounts. To ensure that the report is duplicated to the members of the credit control committee

  • To make recommendations to the Board regarding write offs and provisions on bad debtor accounts.

  • Referring members with debt problems to organisations that can help them deal with their debt

  • Liaising with debt recovery companies Liaising with the Credit Union's Solicitor

  • Representing the Credit Union when taking the member through small claims court Making arrangements for the formal recovery of bad debts

  • Delivering a high standard of member service

  • Dealing with third party correspondence regarding loan arrears, with due attention to Data Protection legislation, Treating Customers Fairly (TCF) Guidance and Fair Treatment of Vulnerable Customers Guidance

  • To attend training programs and workshops as required by the credit union to ensure that you maintain up to date product/service knowledge

  • Conduct all activities with confidentiality and in accordance with the requirements of Data Protection, Anti Money Laundering Legislation and WBR CU Policies and Procedures

  • Adhering to compliance and high standard member service and Credit Union Ethos Maintaining all Risk & Compliance Standards

  • To be aware of and comply with all Health & Safety regulations as directed by the credit union


Administration Duties to include:

  • To act as cashier/ teller as required and undertake such other administrative duties as may be directed from time to time by the manager
  • Responsible for occasional preparation of paperwork for disbursement of loans. Promote growth of Credit Union in terms of Membership and Lending and actively contribute to these promotional activities


Experience Essential Criteria

  • 5 or more GCSE's including Maths and English (Grades A-C) or equivalent Minimum 2 years' experience within the last 5 years as a Credit Control Officer Confidence in using IT software such as Microsoft Office

  • Excellent literacy and numeracy skills

  • Excellent member service, interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to converse with members effectively and in a professional manner

  • Highly organized and good time management skills, with a proactive and enthusiastic approach to work and Ensuring accuracy, attention to detail and the ability to work to tight deadlines

  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team High Levels of confidentiality, credibility and integrity

  • Flexible and be able to respond to changing business requirements Eligibility to work in the UK

 
Desirable

  • Knowledge of Credit Union principles, objectives and ethics

  • Previous experience in the use of NI Courts Small Claims Court portal Previous experience of working in a Credit Union environment

  • Recognized Credit Union Financial Qualification i.e., QFA, Credit Union Pathways Diploma.

  • Relevant Third Level Qualification

  • A relevant qualification/training in finance or related subject

  • Although not essential, knowledge of financial services would be highly advantageous

  • Commitment to continuous improvement and self-development

  • A knowledge of the Credit Control Legislation requirements of the various Regulators in the financial sector
