Legal Officer


Position Title:             Legal Officer
Department:               Professional Advisory Services
Reports to:                  Senior Legal Officer

Basic Function:

The Legal Officer will provide various support services necessary to deliver high quality legal, quasi-legal services to affiliated credit unions and the Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU).

Principal Duties:

 
  1. To provide timely written and oral responses to written and oral queries from credit unions.

  2. To monitor and review proposed and new legislation and regulation affecting credit unions and/or the ILCU and providing guidance and advice on same.

  3. To assist with the organisation of general meetings and elections of the ILCU and to prepare related materials.

  4. To notify other Departments within the ILCU of legal or quasi-legal information affecting the ILCU and/or credit unions.

  5. To assist other Departments in dealing with any legal issues that may arise and the review of documents produced by other Departments.

  6. To attend credit union board meetings, chapter meetings, ILCU roadshows and other relevant seminars to provide advice and assistance to credit unions on relevant legislative and regulatory matters.

  7. To undertake legal research on issues of relevance to credit unions.

  8. To draft legal forms and documentation to support the credit union operations.

  9. To undertake special projects relevant to his/her area of work and work with other Departments in delivery of those projects.  

  10. To assist the Department in various administrative duties as required.  

  11. Any other duties which may be reasonably required from time to time, and which are commensurate with this role.

 

Person Specification

  • Professional legal qualification as a solicitor or barrister

  • Post qualification experience in-house or a commercial law firm

  • Experience in financial services legislation and regulation is desirable

  • Knowledge and experience of data protection legislation would be a distinct advantage

  • Excellent research and oral and written communication skills

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel

  • Ability to work on own initiative as well as part of a team
