 ILCU R&D Delivery Manager

TITLE:             ILCU R&D Delivery Manager



The ILCU established a new Research & Development (R&D) function in September 2020, hiring a R&D Delivery Manager to facilitate innovation, collaboration and enablement, and to support credit unions, on the island of Ireland, in the identification and delivery of financial products and services that address their needs.

It was envisaged that the R&D Centre would build incrementally over subsequent years in support of the ILCU's Strategic Plan. Therefore, after a successful initial 12 months for the function, the ILCU is now seeking to recruit a second R&D Delivery Manager to expand the service and build upon what has been achieved to date.


Role Description

The ILCU is now looking to recruit an experienced professional, reporting to the CEO.

This role offers a unique opportunity to further develop a centre of excellence, based in Lower Mount St, Dublin, but reaching out to our entire credit union community across the island of Ireland. The successful candidate will be a dynamic individual and a critical thinker, with significant leadership experience across multiple disciplines including strategic planning, operations, proposition development and product innovation. The successful candidate will have the skill and experience to lead the development of new products and services, on a collaborative basis with credit unions. 



  • Support the development of  the operating model for the R&D function, focused on the effective and efficient delivery of new products and services, utilising good project management practices

  • Develop commercially compelling propositions and agile enablement capabilities for ILCU affiliated credit unions, working closely with the Senior Management Team of the ILCU

  • Support the development of a roadmap for new products and services, which will promote deeper engagement with members and have a meaningful impact on them

  • Support the development and implementation of  a Strategic Plan for the R&D function, together with a robust performance review process

  • Develop strong relationships with credit unions through good collaboration and engagement, combined with a strong track record of delivery on commitments   

  • Identify and develop relationships with external thought leaders and potential stakeholders and collaborators


Job Role

  • Develop a plan in collaboration with credit unions for the delivery of specific products and services for credit unions, supported by preferred partners (as appropriate) and delivery timelines

  • Develop business cases to support each proposal, on a prioritised basis

  • Secure the necessary approvals and budgets and deliver the agreed products and services 

  • Actively participate in the assessment of new business opportunities

  • Champion the R&D function at various credit union events

  • Explore/evaluate potential funding sources, both internally and externally, for significant initiatives 

  • Ongoing engagement with credit unions to identify customer needs and review related independent  research


Qualifications and Experience 

  • Ideally, 10 years’ experience in creating, fostering, and implementing innovative ideas, new business processes, new products and services across the financial services industry

  • Experience of engaging with public and private funding mechanisms

  • Programme management or project management experience

  • Relevant degree or equivalent professional qualification, advanced degree is desirable

  • Demonstrated ability to lead small and large teams of direct and indirect reports

  • Familiarity with innovation concepts/methodologies such as they apply to real business problems

  • Passion for digitisation and emerging technologies, ability to demonstrate business value of digital solutions


Duration of Contract: 2 year Fixed Term Contract 

Salary: Commensurate with experience.

Location: The position will be based in Lower Mount St., Dublin 2.
