Position Title:          Senior Business Advisor

Overview:

The vision for this new Business Advice and Support team will be Empowering Credit Unions to realise their potential.   While it will support adherence to the statutory regulatory framework, it will no longer operate as a parallel regulatory mechanism within the sector but deliver a broad range of advisory services to affiliated credit unions on the island if Ireland. The Business Support and Advice team will continue to work to safeguard the interests of our members and the credit union movement in general, through operation of the Savings Protection Scheme (SPS). The Team will develop a risk register so that it can identify ‘at risk ‘credit unions. This is so that the team can provide additional monitoring and support where needed.

Purpose:

A dedicated Contact / Relationship Manager for an allocation of credit unions providing a business advisory service involving email, phone and support visit contacts, combined with delivery of themed visit service to assigned credit unions and acting as the main liaison point between credit unions and League.
To develop and implement an annual programme of operational visits to the relevant group of credit unions in order:

  • To provide operational, administrative and procedural advice in respect of all aspects of the credit union's activities. 

  • To guide credit unions on their rules and the legal and institutional framework within which they operate.

  • To report issues back to the ILCU and ensure that the relevant departments / people take the appropriate action.

  • To make reports, recommendations and follow-up thereon.

The position covers all credit unions in Ireland, including Northern Ireland and assignments will be based on broad geographic regions; working on the basis of an annual visit in rotation – in single staff visit assignments.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Proactively contacting credit unions to assess business needs and to advise relating to League services, including business support visits
2. Updating credit unions on market trends, regulatory changes and other business advisory relevant to their business.
3. To issue guidance to credit unions on the rules and the legal and institutional framework within which they operate.  To make reports, recommendations and follow-up thereon
4. To regularly monitor potential and actual individual credit union risks of any kind and to report and make recommendations on them.
5. To assist the credit unions in the development of their operations and business on an ongoing basis.
6. Responding to CU queries and referring to other ILCU department for relevant support as necessary
7. Delivery of support visits to credit unions (minimum of  1 per year to each credit union) involving:

  • support for one of strategic planning;
  • business development;
  • and Pearls interpretation

8. To regularly monitor potential and actual risks of any kind within individual credit unions, reporting and make recommendations on any identified.
9. Analysis, reporting and support to credit unions relating to SPS support.
10. Delivery of themed business advisory visits involving sampling of practices and preparation of an assessment report setting out findings including identification of risks in practices requiring remedy
11. To assist with the training and development needs of credit union volunteers and employees and to make presentations at credit union and Chapter seminars.
12. To provide and promote League services.
13. To do all things necessary for the efficient implementation of the duties of a Senior Business Advisor, including liaison with other ILCU personnel, keeping a current knowledge of policies, decisions and services of the ILCU and its associated companies and subsidiaries, with particular emphasis on insurance, investment and technology services.
14. Attend meetings on behalf of the ILCU with Government Departments, product providers, Regulators, etc. and attend credit union board meetings and AGMs as required as may be directed from time to time by the Head of Business Advice & Support Services.
15. To perform other duties as required.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

The ideal candidate will:

  • hold a professional accountancy qualification and /or a Business Degree;

  • have at least 2 years’ experience working in a business consulting or internal company project delivery role;

  • have prior experience and a good understanding of and capacity to ensure up to date knowledge of market trends, regulatory requirements and other business information relevant to the credit union sector including but not limited to: GDPR, AML, loan book requirements, governance requirements, PRISM audit components;

  • have an analytical and detailed approach, including business report writing skills;

  • possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills;

  • have the capacity to ensure up to date knowledge of League offerings and structure to effectively distribute information and manage referrals;

  • have a responsive interpersonal approach, interested in developing and maintaining relationships

  • be self-motivated and be able to show high levels of initiative;

  • Flexible approach to work, willing to re-prioritise and adjust work plans at short notice to respond to member needs

  • have a good working knowledge of PCs, Word and Excel; and

  • a full clean driving licence is essential

Location & Flexibility:

Position is based from Head Office, Dublin but requires travel to credit unions in allocation area several days per week.
