Public Service Credit Union is a progressive, member-focused industrial credit union whose primary aim is to provide financial services that meet the needs of our growing membership. As part of our development plans, we wish to appoint a Senior Loans Officer. This is an excellent opportunity to join a leading and ambitious credit union, located at St. Stephens Green, Dublin 2.


Senior Loans Officer 

Contract Status: Full Time, Permanent Contract
Reporting to: Lending Manager/CEO

Reporting directly to the Lending Manager and to the CEO, the Senior Loans Officer will have key responsibility for assessing members’ applications for loans in adherence to the credit union’s lending policies and procedures, and in accordance with responsible lending practices. With a focus on mortgage applications, the Senior Loans Officer will also support the Lending Manager in a number of ways, including deputising for the Lending Manager and assisting in the areas of policy, lending strategy and loan product development, along with contributing to the smooth operation of the lending function by undertaking related administrative and organisational tasks, and keeping abreast of the wider credit union operational tasks and procedures, to allow for occasional coverage for colleagues in the operations area.


More specifically, he/she will:
  • Grant loans to members in accordance with lending policy and procedures, operating strictly within the specified limits of authority, practicing responsible lending in accordance with the credit union ethos and working closely with the credit union Lending Manager.

  • Evaluate mortgage applications and assist members in progressing such applications and in preparing to draw down funds.

  • Communicate with and assist members regarding their loan applications in person, by telephone and by various online/electronic means.

  • Deputise for the Lending Manager when appropriate, and support the Lending Manager in the smooth running of the lending function

  • Assist the Lending Manager and CEO in developing lending policy, lending strategy and loan product development; including identifying and implementing process efficiencies within the lending team, including recommending improvements to administration practices;

  • Assist the Lending Manager in the development and preparation of lending reports and KPIs.

  • Provide training, coaching and guidance to the loans officers and contributing to loan underwriting and decision-making, particularly in relation to the more complex loan applications;

  • Look after all aspects of loan administration; perfects security; ensure safekeeping of credit agreements and other relevant documentation; implement anti-money laundering and “customer due diligence” habits and procedures to the highest standard.

  • Support the activities of the credit committee, which will involve attendance at credit committee meetings and producing reports as required by the Lending Manager/Credit Committee;

  • Review the loan portfolio regularly to identify trends, opportunities and profile risk;

  • Ongoing liaison with the wider CU team, including the management team, credit control, operations and marketing functions


In carrying out his/her duties on behalf of the credit union, the Senior Loans Officer shall at all times act in conformance with the Standard Rules of Credit Union (ROI), the Credit Union Act 1997 (as amended) and regulation thereunder, all applicable Regulatory Requirements as may be introduced/amended from time to time, the Consumer Credit Directive and all other legislation and regulation applicable to the credit union sector.


The Person:

The successful candidate will have:

  • Previous lending experience, ideally in a credit union context and ideally with a previous exposure to mortgage lending;

  • A relevant financial services lending qualification, such as APA loans and/or QFA (or equivalent);

  • Strong people skills, with the ability to coach, mentor and guide the development of colleagues within the lending team, and to work effectively with other team members

  • Strong interpersonal and communication (both spoken and written) skills

  • Good report-writing skills

  • Good presentation skills (desirable)

  • Good IT skills (desirable)

  • Experience in, or an understanding of, the credit union sector in Ireland

  • Satisfy current ‘minimum competence’ requirements for lending as set by the Central Bank of Ireland for the credit union sector, and be willing to undertake further training to achieve those requirements that may be updated/amended from time to time.
