What do you think is the greatest contribution that credit unions make?
Credit unions are the engines of communities. Credit Unions are fundamentally about "member empowerment" and by extension community empowerment. By facilitating and enabling mutual help, credit unions deliver huge positive social impacts. Credit unions need to be at the forefront of initiatives to improve members lives and that means being visible and active in a range of projects to address societal challenges. We do this by advocating and delivering for members in everything we do
As an ILCU Board / Supervisory Committee member, what do you hope to achieve during your term?
I want to see an effective and efficient ILCU that is visibly delivering for member credit unions. I want the ILCU being a relevant, proactive and engaged body that is "leading" with a vision and imagination for what the "movement" is and can be. I want the League Board to understand and be reflective of the innovation and courage of credit union, outward focused with priority of forcing the collective strength of the movement into the national consciousness
If you were Minister of State for Credit Unions, what one change would you make?
A cultural shift in the mindset of politicians is needed. Credit Unions need to be seen as enablers of communities with a unique presence with their members. Credit unions are successful however, this has come without real practical political support. To simply deflect to CBI is a cheap excuse and an abdication of responsibility to the millions of credit union members around the country. I think there needs to be a realisation that Irish Credit unions are in a dangerous place and that a move beyond lip service is needed. Credit Unions cannot implement government policy without government support.
