Messages of Condolence - John Hume

Posted on: 07 Aug 2020

The island of Ireland has been in mourning in recent days following the news that John Hume had sadly passed away after a long illness.

John was so widely loved and admired for his unwavering commitment to social justice, and his compassion for ordinary people.

John was one of the driving forces for the establishment of the credit union movement in Ireland. He continues to be an inspiration to everyone involved in the credit union movement on the island of Ireland today.

We have been overwhelmed by the kind messages and beautiful anecdotes of John which have been shared with us in recent days, by both credit union personnel and credit union members. It is clear that John touched so many lives with his warmth, empathy and charisma.  With the permission of John’s family, we now wish to give people an opportunity to share their condolences or their memories or anecdotes of John. The Irish League of Credit Unions will provide these messages to John’s family in the coming weeks, as well as sharing some of the comments on our social media channels.
