Suspicious Calls offering Personal Loans

Posted on: 09 Nov 2021

The Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU) has been made aware that some members of the public have received a phone call offering personal credit from a person purporting to be an ILCU representative. Please note, the ILCU is a trade and representative body and does NOT provide loans.

We have been advised that the 'scheme' operates as follows. A member of the public sees an online advert offering a 'same day' loan / 'everyday' loan and subsequently enters their details into an online form. The person subsequently receives a call (which is masked to look like it is coming from 01-6146700). When the person expresses an interest, the caller asks for the person's account number and advises that they will need to transfer a sum of money for insurance purposes (€299 in one case) before they can draw down the loan.
Members of the public should be aware that the Irish League of Credit Unions is a representative body for credit unions and does NOT provide loans. If anyone receives a phone call in this regard they should not make any payments and should report the call immediately to An Garda Siochana.
