Fraud Alert – Telephone Scam Impersonating the Irish League of Credit Unions

Posted on: 19 Oct 2026

The Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU) has been made aware of a suspected telephone scam in which an individual impersonated a representative of the ILCU. A credit union member received a telephone call from a man who claimed to be calling from the Irish League of Credit Unions and advised the member that unusual activity had been detected on their account.

During the call, the member was asked to provide their name and member number. However, when the caller subsequently requested the member's PIN, the member recognised the suspicious nature of the request and ended the call. The ILCU wishes to highlight this incident to ensure that credit unions remain alert to fraudsters impersonating the League and attempting to obtain members' personal and security information.

Key Fraud Indicators Identified

  • The caller claimed to represent the Irish League of Credit Unions.

  • The caller used a named identity, introducing himself as Peter Conroy, to establish credibility.

  • The caller created a sense of urgency by referring to unusual activity on the member's account.

  • The member was asked to provide their PIN, which should never be disclosed to another person.

Guidance for Credit Union Members

Never Disclose Your PIN
You should never disclose their PIN, passwords, one-time passcodes or other confidential security credentials to anyone over the phone, regardless of who the caller claims to represent.
Members should be advised that a request for a PIN is a significant warning sign of potential fraud.

Be Alert to Impersonation Scams
Fraudsters may impersonate the ILCU, a credit union or another trusted organisation to gain a member's confidence. They may refer to suspicious account activity, security concerns or other matters to encourage members to disclose confidential information.

Encourage Independent Verification
If a member receives an unexpected call concerning their account or personal information, they should end the call and contact their credit union directly using a verified telephone number or another established contact method. Members should not rely solely on the caller's displayed telephone number or the name provided by the caller to establish their identity.

Respond Appropriately to Suspected Fraud
Always report a suspicious call. Credit unions can help establish what information may have been disclosed and assess whether any further protective action is required.

Key Message
Always be vigilant, your PIN and other confidential security credentials must never be shared with anyone. Members should independently verify unexpected calls and report suspected impersonation attempts to their credit union.
